Ibuprofen woes

By Scar1337 Yoshikawa

From a young age, I have had problems with my joints, in particular, my knees and ankles, which has caused problems when participating in sports teams. Numerous trips to different doctors and different surgeries and the precise diagnosis was never found; there was a period of time where I resorted to either not playing any sports or take Ibuprofen on a regular basis to relieve the pain when my knees would swell up and also heat up at the same time.
Ibuprofen is a drug that is known to be an anti-inflammatory one, and normally used to relieve symptoms such as mine; inflammatory pains, arthritis and fever. It is an analgesic (AKA painkiller for us not-so technically minded), its effects are relatively fast, but not as long lasting as those of aspirin.

After a period of time on relying on Ibuprofen to enable me to play more sports, I began to realise that I experienced minute burning sensations in my stomach occasionally, or just felt uncomfortable, sometimes even resulting in acute stomach pains. Which meant that I had to take other medications to stop the stomach pains on top of Ibuprofen. Which no doubt made matters even worse. Not to mention, having taken Ibuprofen over a long period of time, I became immune to painkillers effects, and only a small dose of Codeine helped with the pain.

Being a person that doesn't know my differences between medicines, this was a relief for me to be able to find medicine that relieved pain relatively quickly and smoothly, but as time grew on, I read up on Ibuprofen, and it turns out that Ibuprofen, like most other medicines, has its adverse effects if taken on a regular basis:

< thinning of the stomach lining
< rashes
< hypertension
< nausea
< kidney failure (subsequently anemia, which I was suspected of having when taking Ibuprofen at a regular basis)

these are only a few of the symptoms that may occur as side effects.

Word of advice for taking Ibuprofen, always take it after meals, not before. From personal experience, I get extremely bad stomach pains if I take it empty stomach.
